Deneen Sokoloski – Vancouver Skating Club

Deneen has 23 years of coaching experience throughout the province, with the last 13 of those years at the Vancouver Skating Club. She is a double Gold medalist and has many talents, including costume design, music editing, theatre production, and choreography.
Deneen obtained a Diploma in Recreation Leadership from Langara College in 1994 and has completed three years of a General Arts degree from the University of British Columbia. All of Deneen's educational and work experiences have helped her understand the needs of skaters within a community setting. Deneen has an extensive experience in planning and organizing special events, including club based ice shows. She developed and ran recreation-based learn to skate programs for Port Moody Parks and Recreation and the Grandview Skating Club in Vancouver. Deneen has coordinated and piloted multiple youth-at-risk recreation programs in the Vancouver downtown eastside, such as KidSafe and Summer in the City. In addition to her coaching background, Deneen previously had eight years of experience as a youth-at-risk support worker with the Vancouver School Board.
Deneen currently coaches skaters from beginner level to both the Provincial and National level. Deneen has previously taught Special Olympic skaters from 1999 to 2002 and was team coach for the BC Winter Games from 1987 to 1989. She served as the Coaches representative on the BC-Yukon Section Judges Committee for three years. Deneen was a board member for the Canada Ice Dance Theatre from 1994 to 1996. Currently she is the chairperson of both the BC Coast Region Coaches Committee and BC Coast Region Development Team.No longer holding this position.
Deneen's teaching philosophy is oriented around the development of the whole child as a successful and productive individual through the discipline of figure skating. She believes that the experiences gained by young athletes through participation in this sport not only ensures a love for skating and but also important life skills such as leadership, goal setting, cooperative learning, and the development of a strong work ethic.
